Caring for each other as good neighbors do. Thanks for your generosity.

In response to our FB post "Want to Give Back?" about covering overdue lunch accounts for our students rather than treating the person behind us in the Starbucks line . . .

Today I spoke at length with Tammy Welch, Director of Student Nutrition for the Fort Mill school district. During the pandemic, the federal government ensured that all students ate for free. That program has ended with families and schools scrambling to react to the change. Students from households receiving SNAP benefits, who are in foster care, receive temporary assistance or qualify for Medicaid automatically qualify for free meals. All other families must actually apply for assistance, and this is based on income and the number of family members in a household. Not every family understands the need to now apply for assistance.

While Ms. Welch assured me that no student is ever denied a school meal, her food budget is presently $12,000 in the red and that will increase. The school district is not allowed to use federal funds for this deficit.

And that is why the Fort Mill Schools "Angel Fund" needs your monetary donations. This fund is used to help meet the needs of Fort Mill students.

If you wish to help, you may send a check made out to: Fort Mill Schools Student Nutrition Department and mail it to 2233 Deerfield Drive, Fort Mill, SC 29715

Please include your email on the check so that Ms. Welch may recognize your donation.

Want to make it easier on yourself because you don't actually have a checkbook anymore? Then Venmo or PayPal to The Giving Porch and we will issue one check for all the donations.

Fort Mill is a great place to live but, for far too many families, it's a daily struggle to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Let's help ensure that all students can count on a nutritious meal so that they are at their maximum learning capacity.

Thanks for your concern. Let's all be "angels" to these deserving children.
